The weekend has brought a few glimmers of encouraging news about the upcoming election. Several reports claim that undecided voters are breaking for Kamala Harris. A poll out of Iowa—until now considered a safe state for all Republicans—shows Harris up by 3 points. Pennsylvania might be swinging her way, too. Yet oddly enough, the moment that lifted my spirits the most was Harris’ appearance on Saturday Night Live last night, where she exchanged a few happy words with the actress who portrays her on the show. In the skit, the two faced each other through a phony dressing room mirror, as if one person talking to herself. Our Vice President was smiling and happy and engaging, and clearly enjoying herself a great deal—and dang it all, I need a heavy dose of that enthusiasm.
The most depressing news were reports of voters who see Trump for exactly who he is, but who are supporting him all the same. Their logic: “I know Trump is deranged and evil, but I’m voting for him because….” and then they cite some rationale, generally about the economy or the southern border. Of course, these people do not use the word evil, as I did just now. But that’s the word they clearly mean.
Disagree? Let’s begin with the definition of evil not from the dictionary, but from a website devoted to the Christian Bible:
“Evil consists of thoughts, actions, or forces that diminish life. Evil takes what God planned for the good of all his creation and distorts or defiles it.”
Now listen to snippets from the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden. The media has focused on the joke about Puerto Rico as “an island of garbage,” but speaker after speaker were tossing out similarly hateful rhetoric, to the cheers of the assembled.
Hey America, go look in the mirror. Ask yourself if Trump and his minions are distorting and defiling the good of all God’s creation. Then ask yourself which side you are on.
I’m with Kamala. You should be too.
